What are page breaks?

Page breaks allow you to force text onto the next page and are preferable to inserting several 'enters'.


How do I add a page break?

To add a page break to go:

Insert
Break
Page Break

How do I add page numbers?

To add page numbers go to

Insert
Page Numbers

and fill in the dialogue box that opens.

To add page numbers to only one section and not the rest of your document (this only applies if you have included Section Breaks into your document) try:

View
Headers and Footers

and a new toolbar will open with new icons.

hash image will insert the page number into the header or footer field you are currently working in. hash image will allow you to adjust the way your page numbers are displayed using the following dialogue box.

What are margins?

Margins are the width of space between the text and the edge of the page when you print it. You must include a margin of at least 1cm on all edges of the page to ensure all information fits on the page when it is printed.


How do I adjust my margins?

You can adjust your margins in two ways. Your first option is go to go the page setup dialogue box by going to

File
Page Setup

and in the 'Margins' tab, choose your margin widths. On the right side of this dialogue box a preview box shows you what your document will look like with your chosen margin widths.

You can also adjust your margins in the print preview screen. You can only adjust them in this screen if you have 'view ruler' selected.


How do I insert my details into the header?

To insert your details into the header of your document, go to the header and footer view by going to

View
Header and Footer

and type your details into the header. You can right align these by clicking on justify image and adjust the font size by choosing from the drop down menu in your toolbar.

When you have finished, your header should look something like

Click 'Close' in the Header and Footer toolbar to return to your normal view of the document.


What is print preview?

The print preview screen allows you to see your document as it will be printed. Through this option, you can ensure you don't have a lot of unnecessary blank space and that you are happy with the layout of your assignment.

You can view your print preview by either clicking on preview image or by going to

File
Print Preview


How do I adjust my paper size to A4?

Visit the page setup dialogue box by going to

File
Page Setup

Click on the Paper Size tab and choose A4 in the drop down box entitled 'Paper size'.

How do I save my document correctly?

When you are ready to save your document, go to

File
Save As

Name your document in 'File name' and choose the file type from your drop down box (Word Document or Rich Text Format only please). This dialogue box will also show you where it will save your file. If you are unhappy with the location Word has chosen for you, choose a location you can easily find later from the drop box entitled 'Save in'.
